What kakenagashi means

Per the Japan Spa Association: fresh spring water keeps flowing into the tub and overflows, and the overflow is never put back into the tub. Spring water runs into the tub just as it comes from the source, with no control of the volume (Beppu city).

How it differs from recirculated baths

A recirculated bath controls the volume, filters the water that drains out and puts it back (Beppu city). Kakenagashi never puts the overflow back into the tub (Japan Spa Association).

How we checked

Each bath's own site, or its town or tourism association page, quoted word for word and linked as the source; checked 30 October 2026.

Pure: the page states no added water, no heating and no recirculation, 100% source water, or fully free-flowing. Heated and Diluted: the page says so. Some baths: only some tubs.

Baths whose page does not say so are left out.
